Here is an overview of the different characters in Shenmue.
Ryo Hazuki Ryo's a third year highschool student of age
eighteen who lost his mother when he was 3. He's since
been brought up by his strict father, Iwao Hazuki, who
trained him in the family's traditional form of martial arts.
Throughout the course of the game and its sequels, Ryo
will journey away from home, traveling across the seas to
foreign lands.
Iwao Hazuki The strict father of Ryo, Iwao is an expert in the Hazuki family
martial arts. He's raised Ryo from childhood, and his deep will
to practice martial arts has earned him the respect of those
around him. The story begins with his death at the hands of
Souryu.
Souryu A man who brings a dark cloud over Ryo and the whole Shenmue
saga. He has the ability to overpower opponents by fear alone.
The story begins with his killing Iwao before Ryo's very own eyes,
and Ryo is left to wonder what relation this guy holds to his
father.
Hrasaki Nozomi She is a kind girl in the same class as Ryo who works at
a flower shop in the merchant district of Yokosuka. She's
just returned from Canada, and now lives with her
grandmother - her parents currently remain in Vancouver.
She's an important, understanding friend of Ryo's.
Rei Shenhua
Shenhua has lived around nature since birth, and was
brought up without the slightest notion of holding distrust
for others. Beneath the innocent expression on her face,
she's is full of courage and strength, but does seem to have
some sort of great fear or deep grief. She lives in China, and
her fate changes greatly when she meets Ryo.
Ren Werying Head of a street gang in Hong Kong. He's learned to live
when faced with danger, and has grown sharp as a
result.
Shai A figure who causes a constant shadow as Ryo searches for his
father. He lurks in the dark, and has eyes of a beast. He's has an
overall ugly appearance, and is perceived frightfully. Nobody
knows his personal history.
Ine Hayata A quiet, elderly lady who handles all the housework of the Hazuki
household. She's a gentle character, but has a strong heart and
mind, and takes a decisive attitude. She secretly watches over Ryo
from afar.
Masayuki Fukuhara Masayuki is a kind, gentle, and hard working man, who served as
Iwao's only apprentice, until Iwao was killed. He's easy to speak
to, and Ryo consults with him.
